Fairfax Operation WOW!

Wellness Opportunities for Warriors to Kick-Off

The Fairfax County of Department of Community and Recreation Services has developed a program for service men and women injured in Iraq and Afghanistan who are interested in participating in physical activities in a community setting. 

Voucher Program

This program provides a voucher to service members to obtain a Fairfax County Park Authority pass that is good for 25 visits that focuses on physical fitness or the voucher can be applied towards the registration fee to participate in an adult athletic team sports program in the county.

Leisure Exploration Opportunity – Starts End of June

Not sure which activities interest you? To help you make that decision, Operation WOW! Has scheduled an eight-week physical activity exploration classes throughout the county, beginning in mid-June. This program will assist you in finding your activity preferences. Participants in the activity exploration class will meet once a week for eight weeks as a group to sample a variety of physical activities available throughout Fairfax County.  The exploration program is free.  Veterans will assist in running this program.

Welcome Home, Vietnam Veterans Day Proclamation

State Senator Chap Peterson ( D-Fairfax  ) and Delegate David Bulova (D-Fairfax) presented copies of the resolutions passed by Virginia legislature declaring March 30 as “Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day” in the Commonwealth to Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 227 at the chapter’s monthly meeting on May 20, 2010.  The resolutions were accepted by Byron Sheldon, President, and Bruce Waxman, Vice President, on behalf of the chapter.

 

The resolutions designate March 30, in 2010 and in each succeeding year, as Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day in Virginia to celebrate the service and numerous contributions of the Commonwealth's Vietnam-era veterans and to coincide with the national observance of the day.   The resolution had 138 co patrons in the House of Delegates.
 

A statewide presentation of the resolutions will be made  to the Virginia State Council of Vietnam Veterans of America at the biennial convention in Richmond on June 19, 2010.

VIRGINIA’S WOUNDED WARRIORS PROGRAM

Chapter 227, Vietnam Veterans of America Inc., invites all veterans, family members of active duty military personnel, friends, and the general public to attend the June 17, 2010, chapter meeting at Neighbor’s Restaurant, 262D Cedar Lane, Cedar Lane Shopping Center, Vienna, Virginia, at 7:30 p.m.

Jim Thur, Virginia’s Wounded Warrior Regional Director and Vietnam War veteran, will discuss the program to assist Virginia military veterans including National Guard and reservists and the new Presumptive Eligibility for Agent Orange benefit. Reservists and family members are strongly encouraged to attend. The general public and all veterans are invited, and the admission is free. The membership serves as a “Fire Support Base” for veterans who are seeking closure on their Tour of Duty and a renewal of their Vietnam camaraderie.

Join Vet-Link; meets in Charlottesville

Attention Veterans

Join Vet-Link!

Vet-Link is a networking group formed by the Virginia  Wounded Warrior Program.  The group is designed to meet the needs of veterans by providing them with a safe place to connect with other vets to provide job placement assistance, peer support, fun activities, and discuss resources relating to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI).  Vet-Link will meet in the chapel of The Haven, located downtown at 112 West Market St, Charlottesville VA, 22902.  The group will meet weekly on Tuesday nights from 6-7 pm beginning on May 11.  To gain additional information, please call Dominick Rolle, Peer Support Specialist for the Virginia Wounded Warrior Program at 434-962-0175 or by emailing him at drolle@regionten.org.
